Understanding a changing ocean.

I’m Muhammad Saad, a physical oceanographer and PhD candidate at the University of Bologna, working in ocean modelling at CMCC. Based in Bologna, Italy, I use numerical modelling and simulations to investigate ocean dynamics.

Research focus.

Physical oceanography
01

Mediterranean circulation

Investigating circulation, water-mass formation, and variability across the Mediterranean Sea.

02

River–ocean interactions

Examining how changes in freshwater discharge influence salinity, stratification, and regional dynamics.

03

Numerical ocean modelling

Using high-resolution simulations and ocean reanalyses to study past and present ocean states.

Research spotlight

A changing Nile.
A connected sea.

Exploring the relationship between Nile discharge and the Mediterranean Sea.

Interests.

Methods & dynamics
01

High-resolution modelling

Resolving fine-scale ocean circulation and exploring how eddies and fronts interact with the larger-scale flow.

02

Quasi-nonhydrostatic methods

Exploring numerical approaches beyond the hydrostatic approximation, with an interest in vertical dynamics.
